Blender for Modelling

Post by Skiffie »

I'm looking at using Blender to create a new 3D model but haven't the faintest idea of where to start - has anyone used Blender for modelling at all?

Open source Boat Model building (free as in beer)

- start with freeship for hull etc. (could use blender, freeship imho easier)
- blender for axes rigs sails, mast boom, poles, textures
- save from blender in 3ds format (3ds plugin)
- import to vsk with vsk boatbuilder.

(Mind you, i haven't gotten to the point where i need textures yet, so it might still bust. I can however transfer my projects to 3ds max anytime.. so i'm not worried. Glad to help remove any obstacles you get though..)

Hull done in Delft / Freeship

Mind you it's just a shell, no decks or anything.

Before starting to spend time on anything in blender you might try it out first..

What i did was grab the boat files (*.dds) of some existing boat A,
that works with vskboatbuilder.

import those in blender

grab some existing boat B (download from their website) in Delft- / Freeship

export B to blender.

In blender replace the hull of A with B

Exports the whole again as *dds files.

Run the vskboatbuilder.

Sail the boat.

If you get an oiltanker to sail in vsk, your setup should work.

Hi all,
I am actually trying to build a simple 30ft boat.
With Delftship (free version) I am building the Hull/Deck, Keel & Rudder.

But how is it possible to proceed with FREE tools?

IMO 30 days trial period is a lot too short to get the further steps done in a low cost creation using 3DS MAX or CINEMA 4D.

Did anyone tried BLENDER?
Or any other ideas?

Hi Joerg,

you can import the freeship model in blender.

Do sails, texturing, axis and all and then export.

I'ld advise to get a model that works and then replace modify, to what you want. Should work as I posted some time ago.

PM if you need help with extensions.

Ähem - I installed BLENDER and would like to do a test before proceeding with more details in DELTSHIP....

Do you have some hints, how to proceed?
I need to install an extension to BLENDER?

In which format do I have to save the DELFTSHIP model?

Best regards,
Joerg

All right , blender has some models example that can be donloaded..
I downloaded the lemmer aak. Exported that to Blender then,
took the 3D MAX RC44 and imported that in Blender dumped the RC44's hull, cut and pasted the lemmer aak hull. Exported it all again.

Ran i through the Boatbuilder.. and voily i had a very ugly looking something that behaved like a RC44....

Project wa frozen as i could no make the sideboards rotate in relation to the booms rotation.

You'll need some extensions to blender, or also Gimp + extensions (for the textures/skins)

OK, next problem.

I have W7...VSK5 version 2.0.5
I started BoatsimporterV2.1 (the exe is placed in the C:\Program Files\Vsk5 ) and the message appears:
Temp\ directory not found
I created in every folder in this path a Temp directory, but that doesn't work either.

Any suggestions?

Greets
Joerg

PS: I was in EDIT MAP mode while trying to start the Boatimporter

OK , the Boat Importer runs now...
after adding a temp folder in the MyDocuments/VSK5 folder.

Now the next problems occurs...

I imported the example 3ds to Blender,
exported the same / unchanged file to 3ds and the Boatimporter says
Sail Mainsail: Can't find tree mainsail on solid
The import dialogue offer 3 options:
Size constraint
Image Search &
Transform fix
Explanation can be foun here:
http://de.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_Do ... _%283ds%29

IMO I have to disable all 3 of these items.

At least one skipper told me, that he was able to run the boat installer with an exported 3DS from Blender....

If someone outthere nows the reason for my problems , pls show up :-)

Maybe a 3DS Max user can help....
The imported Scene tree looks like this:
http://www.vskfun.com/VSKFunReloaded/ph ... &mode=view

The Mainsail tree is present...so maybe Blender change some character and that makes it impossible to detect the Mainsail tree for the Boatimporter??

Still hoping for (more :-) ) support.
