ANNOUNCEMENT - 18ft Skiff Released
You must be registered with VSK-AUS (free!) and agree to the Creative Commons license.
This project has been nearly two years in the making, from my own original idea to it later being taken up by SoggySox (initial DELFTShip modelling of hull) and davidnumber1 (3DS conversion and rig). These guys progressed the model a fair way before real life got in the way, and we handed over the modelling to Lennart.
Right here we must thank Lennart for his detailed work, lots of little (stressing - little) touches that really make the model a gem. This amongst his own projects, a big word of thanks to you!
Through to beta testing, and SoggySox's work on the XML as time permitted, big thanks to the many testers from VSK-AUS. We even submitted the model (RC1) to an online test with about 20 or so VSK-AUS members.
The Modelling God, maitai, helped us out in bits and pieces (mainly advice) up to this stage, however he was the one to optimise the model for game play to reduce frame rate issues, and also did the final tweaks to ensure the rules engaged as they should. Again, maitai is working on his own projects with the Virtual Winds team, so we can't thank you enough for your help.
The Skin Studio team from VSK-AUS get a big shout out for the skins - big kudos to Guane, arguably VSK's best skinner, Jesse and MadDad for their work.
Thanks to inner(TJR) for his promo video, the real footage and commentary is from the Grand Prix Sailing of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Also to oot_1960 for his work on the installers, and the admins at VSK-AUS for hosting the model.
A quick word on the courses...
The Sydney map "JJ Giltinan" courses are the real, full length courses that the Australian 18 Footers League uses for their club and championship racing. The 2009 JJ Giltinan World 18ft Skiff Championships are now being raced on Sydney Harbour. These courses are hence quite long.
The Adelaide course is a tropical map approximation of one of the courses sailed by the Grand Prix skiffs when they travelled across Australia for their racing.
The Brisbane course again is a rough approximation of the Brisbane River course for a NE breeze sailed by the Brisbane 18 Footers Sailing Club
The model is distributable under a Creative Commons License, it may be distributed with no modification, with no commericals, and work should be attributed back to the modellers and coders. The full CC License is linked in the installer.

New Version Out Now at http://www.vsk-aus.com
After some considerable development, we are very proud to re-launch an improved version of the 18ft Skiff model.
The new model basically uses the same 3D, so all of the original skins and templates are fully compatible. There is a slight changes to the attitude of the boat fore and aft, resulting in a slightly bow up attitude compared to V1, as well as raising the rudder box and correcting the pivot points for the spinnaker. Our thanks to Maitai for the work here.
The biggest changes come from a fully revised XML, thanks to many hours of painstaking work by our own XML Master, Rich...
* fully revised and improved downwind performance - the crazy capsize glitch is fixed, the auto sheeting completely revised and it is a lot more challenging in stronger winds... in a nutshell, it's a lot more realistic.
* upwind the "groove" is a little more open, meaning the benefit from sailing flat is a little less reliant on sailing perfectly flat... again, more realistic.
* some tweaks to the polars all round... the boats are a lot harder to sail in stronger winds and have been optimised for up to F6 wind strengths... would you believe it, that\'s more realistic!
Big thanks to all of the beta testers, but particularly SoggySox, Jesse, Skippy, davidnumber1 for their efforts in the many test nights we performed! Thanks also to those who attended the test events and provided us with invaluable feedback.
