Avoid crashing into the red coloured boats. Thats my advice. Follow the leaders paths to learn the ropes, watch their sail choices and have fun!

OK now I understand after taking #1 for a test drive. I'm sorry to say I don't like #1 at all, the shadow moving over the water is far too distinct between the light and the dark, it looks false, like a dark disk moving over the water. Will try #2, its a bit more gradual transition in contrast.

You may be running at 5 meg but what about the others (the jumping boat people?) Maybe their connection is poor and they are causing the lag.

I have ZA set for all 4 ticks on VSK4.
When you talk of routers and NAPT settings then I 'm lost again.
What is UDP and how do I configure it for VSK4?
How do I post port 2350 to the "outside"?

Jumping boats is a communication lag. Any way of finding servers with better bandwidth/faster connection/closer to you?

in vsk its easy, just go to multiplayer, and internet connection, then create race. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose your course(s) and boats, wind speed, etc. Go race, thats it.
